NoMad Apartment
2021 This project involved the transformation of a duplex within the historic Gilsey House—a cast-iron Second Empire landmark in Manhattan—into a cohesive, light-filled residence that merges Parisian elegance with the openness of a contemporary New York loft. Starting with a raw shell, Povero&Company developed a new layout across the two floors, introducing a gracious primary suite, two children’s bedrooms, a guest room, and an interconnected main floor that blends kitchen, dining, and living areas. A new staircase wraps around a taut brass screen to connect the sixth and seventh floors, establishing both a visual focal point and a spatial hinge. This sculptural element defines an entry sequence while maintaining a sense of airiness and connection between spaces. Throughout, historic references are subtly reinterpreted, lending the space a quiet formality anchored in its historical context. Photos by Noe Dewitt |
